Why it matters

Why this hand matters

Alone, it is easy to feel that nothing changes. Together, women share skills, courage and support, and problems start to move.

A network that welcomes every woman, whatever her age, background or education, is the foundation for all our other nine hands.

Please note: Our member promise: respect, privacy, consent, and no pressure of any kind. We do not collect savings or money from members.

Our aims

What we want to do

  • Growing a network of members and volunteers across Kolkata
  • Working with other women's groups, self-help groups and organisations
  • Regular meet-ups to share skills, support and ideas
  • Partnerships with people and organisations who share our values
  • A safe, respectful space where every member is heard
  • Information for women who want to form or join a self-help group, pointing to the government's official programmes

These are our aims. As each one happens, we will share it here with real photos.

Questions people ask

Frequently asked questions

What is the importance of women self-help groups?
Self-help groups help women save regularly, borrow at fair rates, and start or grow small businesses. Just as importantly, they give women confidence, a support network and a collective voice in their village or neighbourhood. In rural India, SHGs are supported by the government's Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM).
What are the 5 pillars of SHG?
Under DAY-NRLM they are called the "Panchasutra": regular meetings; regular savings; regular inter-loaning (lending within the group); timely repayment; and up-to-date books of accounts. Groups that follow all five build trust among members and become eligible for bank loans.
Who is eligible for SHG?
Under DAY-NRLM, a self-help group is a small group of women from the same area who know and trust each other. The Mission aims to bring at least one woman from every poor rural household into such a group. Members meet regularly, save together and take decisions together.
