সবুজ পৃথিবী সবার জন্যA green earth for everyone

Kolkata's trees, ponds and air belong to all of us. This hand is about small, steady habits that keep our city, and our earth, green.

Who it's for Households, housing societies, schools, and children together with an adult.

Why it matters

Why this hand matters

Women run most of our homes, and homes are where waste, water and energy choices are made every day. Small changes, repeated across many households, add up to a real difference.

Children learn by watching. When mothers, aunts and grandmothers care for the earth, the next generation follows.

Our aims

What we want to do

  • Tree-planting and greening drives in neighbourhoods and school compounds
  • Household waste sorting, composting and less single-use plastic
  • Saving water and electricity at home, with simple practical tips
  • Clean-up drives for local parks, ponds and streets, together with residents
  • Greener festivals: eco-friendly ways to celebrate Durga Puja and other occasions
  • Terrace and kitchen gardens for homes and schools
  • Information on safe disposal of sanitary waste and on eco-friendly menstrual products

These are our aims. As each one happens, we will share it here with real photos.

Step by step

How it works

  1. 1

We choose a park, pond or street together with the residents.

  2. 2

We meet at a fixed point, with gloves and bags provided.

  3. 3

A drive lasts one to two hours. Children join only with an adult.

  4. 4

Safety first: no one picks up glass, sharp or medical waste by hand. We report it to the municipality.

Questions people ask

Frequently asked questions

What was the role of women in the environmental movement in India?
Women have been at the heart of it. In 1730, at Khejarli near Jodhpur in Rajasthan, Amrita Devi Bishnoi led her community in protecting khejri trees; 363 Bishnois, including Amrita Devi and her three daughters, gave their lives. In 1974, during the Chipko movement, the women of Reni village in Chamoli, led by Gaura Devi, stopped contractors from felling their forest. Because women depend so closely on water, fuel and food, they have long been strong protectors of nature.
What are 10 ways I can help protect the environment?
Sort wet and dry waste; compost kitchen scraps; carry a cloth bag and refuse single-use plastic; save water at home; switch off lights and fans you are not using; plant and care for trees; walk, cycle or use public transport; repair and reuse before buying new; choose eco-friendly idols and decorations for festivals; and teach children these habits by example.
